Lockdown 101

Lockdowns are a Leg Control Mechanism used in Half Guard to transition Top Opponents into submissions and sweeps. The technique was popularized by Eddie Bravo of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu.

  1. Bring Outside Foot Inside Opponent’s Leg
  2. Bring Inside Foot over Outside Foot which hooks behind calve
  3. Slide Inside Foot into top of Opponent’s Foot
  4. Boot both Feet and twist out to lock Opponent’s Foot
  5. Bring Knees to Head to lift and control Opponent’s Leg
    1. Do not extend Legs, this lowers Opponent back into their Crossface
    2. Push with the Outside Leg, Pull with the Inside Leg

Offense

Once Lockdown is set, the goal is to transition from the Bottom position into the Top to gain control

  1. Establish Lockdown and get Hands on Opponent’s Hips
  2. Lift Knees and use Hands to throw Opponent up and over you
  3. Turn toward Opponent and establish Hip Scoop with Top Hand
  4. Use Bottom Hand to find Opponent’s Foot and get on your Elbow
  5. Unlock Lockdown, drag Bottom Leg underneath Opponent’s Leg, and get on your Knees
  6. Pull Opponent’s Foot in and drive Head forward to Sweep them

Advanced: Electric Chair

  1. Whip Opponent in direction of Lockdown to cause them to Base Out
    1. Your back may be exposed in this position
  2. Gooseneck Inside Arm and Slip Inside Elbow underneath Base Arm to win the Underhook
  3. Lift Knees and rock Opponent to opposite direction, exposing their Outside Leg
  4. Slip Outside Arm underneath their Leg, the bend of their Knee must sit on top of your Shoulder
  5. Lift Knees and rock Opponent back to Lockdown side, stretching the Outside Arm to secure the Knee
    1. This enters the Electric Chair from which you can get a Submission
  6. Transition to Side Control once Opponent bases out Elbow
    1. You can keep their Leg and pin Side Control with it

Defense

You can either find the Opponent’s Lockdown Heel with your Foot and kick the Lockdown out, or slide your body down to make yourself small and neutralize the Lockdown, then freeing your Knee from their hold.
